Большая церковь Сурб Карапет (Предтечи) в донском армянском селе Несветай, сильно пострадавшая в годы Великой Отечественной войны, до сих пор не удостаивалась подробного исследования. Построенная в 1858–1866 и 1869–1870 гг., с перерывом, вызванным смертью попечителя, купца Карапета Тоникяна, эта церковь является, вероятно, первой в ряду построек донских армян в 50–70-е гг. — времени строительства храмов почти во всех армянских селах Нижнего Дона и в монастыре Сурб Хач (Св. Креста). Здание принадлежит к типу купольного зала с характерными для него пристенными подкупольными пилонами и вытянутостью внутреннего пространства по продольной оси. Незначительное углубление поперечных рукавов снаружи подчеркнуто колонными портиками. С запада перед входом стоит одновременно построенная колокольня. Руина церкви представляет интерес с точки зрения изучения строительной техники, стратиграфии слоев кладки, выполнения каменных деталей, нанесения штукатурки и лепного декора. В статье развивается мысль о глубинной причине задержки классицизма в среде новонахичеванских армян, а также указывается на прототип архитектурной композиции храма в Несветае — основу композиции церкви Св. Екатерины на Невском проспекте Санкт-Петербурга (1771–1780).
The large Church of Surb Karapet (the Forerunner) in the Don Armenian village of Nesvetay, which was severely damaged during the World War II, has not yet received a detailed study. Built in 1858–1866 and 1869–1870, with an interruption caused by the death of the trustee, merchant Karapet Tonikyan, this church is probably the first in a series of churches’ construction of the Don Armenians in the 50s–70s — the time of the construction of churches in almost all Armenian villages of the Lower Don and in the monastery of Surb Khach (Holy Cross). The building belongs to the type of domed hall, with its characteristic wall-mounted dome pylons and elongation of the interior along the longitudinal axis. The slight deepening of the transverse arms from the outside is emphasized by the columned porticos. There is a bell tower built at the same time in front of the western entrance. The ruin of the church is of interest from the point of view of studying construction techniques, stratigraphy of masonry layers, execution of stone details, application of plaster and stucco decoration. The article develops the idea of the underlying reason for the delay of classicism among the New Nakhichevan Armenians, and also points to the prototype of the architectural plan of the temple in Nesvetay — the basis of the plan of the Church of St. Catherine on Nevsky Prospekt in St. Petersburg (1771–1780).
